Capt Tom Kolesnik - Approach and Landing Aids / Next-Gen Technology

Callsign: 'Ranger' - as in 'He once wore a Stetson as an Alberta Park Ranger'

Joined Military:  1986

Aircraft:  CT-134 Musketeer (Trg) / CT-114 Tutor (Trg) / CP-121 Tracker / CT-114 Tutor (IP) /

T-37 Tweet Jet (USAF Exhange PIT IP)  / CC-130H Hercules (SAR) / C-90B King Air

Field Affiliation: Coastal Patrol / Training / Transport / Fixed Wing SAR

Bio:  After pilot training, Capt Kolesnik was posted to Summerside with MR 880 Sqn to fly the CP-121 Tracker (88-90).  Flying the rugged and overpowered Grumman Tracker at low level, in formation, launching rocket salvos, handling the foggy coastal weather and covering SAR standby for the Buffalo folks was a great way to start off his career.  When they closed the Sqn/Base, he was posted to Moose Jaw at "The Big 2" as a Tutor Jet IP, which he did for 4 years.  During that time he was D/CGI and Cobra Flt Cmdr after getting his A2 Instructor Category (90-94).   Since he was hoping to hide from our cold Cdn winters for a bit, he got himself posted down to San Antonio, Texas on Exchange at Randolph, AFB flying the T-37B 'Tweet' Jet as an Instructor at the USAF's Pilot Instructor Training (PIT) unit - the 559 FTS.  While on his 3 year assignment (94-97) , he was F Flt Cmdr for 2 years.

While trying to get his 4th flying tour in, Tom got himself posted back to Canada, just in time for the set-up of the 1 Cdn Air Div HQ in 97; which got him re-assigned to A3 Fighters and led to much education on the ways of neutralizing threats to NORAD and management of the CF-18 weapons arsenal (97-00).  This was all good fun, but it was time to get back to Ops and so across the field in Winnipeg he went to 435 Sqn and the Mighty Herc, flying SAR and World Transport (00-04).  When the rescue missions got slim, Tom got himself re-assigned to the Air Div HQ, but this time as the Pilot SAR Ops Rep for the Fixed Wing SAR Project (the 'little project that almost did').   After 2 yrs of checking out new technology and dreaming of cool new planes, Tom decided it was time for an overseas operational tour.  So, he volunteered to be the first Det Comd/Ops O for the CC-130 Tactical Airlift Unit (TAU) Forward Det in Kandahar (06-07).  While there he got to see how excellent our Cdn Tactical C-130 aircrew, maintenance and MAMS personnel were at supporting Cdn Army and ISAF Operations with transport and airdrop missions.  They were always "On Time - On Target" ... that is at Air Re-Supply!

After his deployment, 435 Sqn came knocking again and Tom was back on the Herc and still in Winnipeg, for another 4 years flying SAR missions and Boxtop operations.  During this posting, he was a Transport and SAR C-130 Aircraft Cmdr, Maintenance Test Pilot and Pilot Prof/SAR Training IP.  Tom also completed the ICP Course while at 435 Sqn and this lead to his assignment in 2011 to the ICP School.
